We are very pleased to be stocking the first two releases on promising new Brighton label Hidden Trail. The two cdeps are both by female singer songwriters and in the alternative folk indie style.
Roxanne de Bastion’s ep contains 4 new tracks of cutting and clever lyrics, delivered with what BBC6 producer Tom Whalley said to be “one of the most perfect voices [he’s] ever heard”. Her lyrics range from introspective journeys in Seeing You and Same Moon, through to observations on instant gratification and repetition (Rerun) and the tearing down of the East Side Gallery in Berlin, Roxanne’s town of birth (Wasteland). Comparisons to Joni Mitchell and more recently Laura Marling are not unjustified. A huge talent and star in the making.
The second ep is by Ellie Ford, 2013 saw the release of Ellie’s debut EP Show Night In – which was celebrated in style with a release show in front of an enthralled audience, in the beautiful St Georges Church, Brighton. This performance led one reviewer to describe Ellie as “Linda Ronstadt fronting the Flying Burrito Brothers”. Other reviewers have compared Ellie to folk trailblazers such as Joni Mitchell and Laura Marling, but Ellie would probably point you in the direction of the likes of Karen Dalton and Joanna Newsom (whose filmed live performances helped Ellie learn the harp). A highly recommended ep of beautiful and haunting folk lullabies.
