Box Bedroom Rebels are firing on all cylinders at the moment, with this sharp and suave release from Adult Books. Adult Books are a trio from LA who make brash Californian surf powerpunkpop…sweet melodies and loud guitars. Like the Ramones (Phil Spector era) overdosing on Sunny Delite and E numbers. A-side tracks “In Love Again” and “Bedsit Infamies” pack a hefty punch, flying out the speakers with glee and unashamed bashfulness while “Staring At The Sea” is taken from their demo and has a kinda Amen Dunes feel to it. Onto the B-side and “L.A Ghosts” has a bit of a male-led Best Coast vibe to it, with thick, chunky, anthemic guitars matching the powerful vocal delivery. “In The City” continues the vibe but with a punkier snarl while “My Demo” stomps along on a retroist garage punk vibe with intricate lead parts and a reverb-heavy vocal. All in all a wonderful set and a brilliant collaboration from this Manchester institution, enlisting the talents of this effortlessly cool LA band. Recommended.
